Gillian Hnatiw is the founder and principal of Gillian Hnatiw & Co., a boutique litigation firm in Toronto. Her broad litigation practice focuses on health law, professional regulation, employment law and, in particular, claims arising from sexual, physical and psychological abuse, harassment and assault. In this capacity, Gillian frequently advocates from plaintiffs and complainants, and provides organizations, employers and professional regulators with advice on how to navigate allegations of sexual misconduct. Gillian has appeared before all levels of court, including numerous cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. Gillian has also appeared before a variety of administrative tribunals and Coroner’s Inquests, including the Inquests into the deaths of Ashley Smith and Katelynn Sampson.
Gillian is currently the Chair of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), which works to advance substantive equality for women through litigation, law reform and public education. She speaks regularly on a wide range of topics and is frequently sought out by industry and mainstream media for comment on issues of sexual violence, discrimination and gender equality.
In March 2020, the Toronto Lawyer’s Association recognized Gillian as a “formidable champion of women’s civil rights” and presented with the Honsberger Award for her work exemplifying the TLA’s three pillars: Advocacy, Community and Knowledge. In 2015, Gillian was named to Lexpert’s annual list of “Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers under 40”. For many years, Gillian has been ranked in Best Lawyers and Lexpert in the fields of medical negligence, personal injury and health care law and by Benchmark Legal for her work in the human rights and employment law sphere.
