James Swanson is a Calgary-based lawyer and registered trademark agent, and founder of the law firm Swanson Law (https://www.swansonlaw.ca/), an entirely virtual legal practice which he opened on January 1, 2019, following his decades of experience with larger law firms, as well as a boutique Internet law firm he founded in the 1990’s.
Before and during law school, James was a professional rock and blues musician, playing keyboards. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 1984 after obtaining his JD from the University of Alberta. James also holds an MBA focusing on Information Technology from Athabasca University’s innovative online MBA program, the first on the planet, which he enrolled in as one of its first students in 1994, graduating with distinction in 1997.
James carries on a legal practice on as paperless a basis as possible, focusing on Technology, Intellectual Property, Privacy and Data Security, Media, and Entertainment.
James has been listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada for many years, including having been voted by his peers as Calgary’s “Technology Law Lawyer of the Year” for both 2017 and 2022, and Calgary’s “Privacy and Data Security Law Lawyer of the Year” for 2020. He has also been listed in Lexpert under Computer & IT Law, Technology Transactions, and Intellectual Property.
